Paediatrics is the branch of medicine that aims to treat infants (babies), children and adolescents (young people) up to the age of 21 years. Paediatricians (medical doctor who specializes in paediatrics) determine particular health issues, diseases and disorders related to the stages of growth and development in this young group of patients.
Diagnostic tools may include blood tests, X-rays, MRI, CT scan, and electrocardiogram (ECG). Paediatricians may also need to work with the patient’s family / guardian for better diagnosis (from their observations) towards the welfare of the child.
Area of paediatrics include:
i) General Paediatric – treats children from birth to adolescence
ii) Neonatology – specialise in looking after newly born and premature babies
iii) Community Paediatrics – treats children with physical disabilities, developmental, social or behavioural problems
iv) Other sub-speciality e.g. Paediatric Cardiology – treating children with cardiac (heart) conditions, gastroenterology, haematology, oncology, rheumatology.
